Engel & Volkers is a real estate agency that was founded in Hamburg, Germany in 1977. In the following decades, the company branched out into many different countries and territories around the world, including the Maltese Islands.

The original founder of Engel & Volkers in 1977 was Christian Volkers. As of 2020, the group of higher management within the company include both Volkers and Sven Odia as co-chairs of the board, along with fellow members Kai Enders, Thilo von Throtha, and Paloma Perez Bravo who handle franchise, finance, and operations respectively.

In Malta, the company operates as a licensed partner of the parent company and was set up by the current CEO, Benjamin Grech. It’s a family affair as both his daughters hold positions in the company (Sara Grech is President and Hannah Grech is the Sales and Administrative Office).

The Operation

Engel & Volkers cover residential and commercial sales and lettings in Malta and Gozo. They are not involved in property management.

A subdivision, Engel and Volkers Sara Grech, is dedicated to the luxury market. Here, 30 years of experience goes into the hands-on approach to achieving the best value for a property in the shortest time. With a sole agency agreement with EVSG, sellers have  access to prospective customers in Europe through the Engel and Volkers network. Sara Grech is located in the Fgura and St. Paul’s branches.

The strongest element of the Engel and Volkers operation is marketing. They have an experienced marketing team who develop a customised approach for each property. Every seller has the option to choose either a “maximum reach” or “highest discretion” strategy.

The company also offers a free and non-binding valuation service based on market insight. Engel and Volkers also publish an online video magazine called Private Residence.

Operating in more than thirty countries across four continents, Engel & Volkers is believed to have more than 800 offices, outlets, and branches in total. In Malta, there are five branches (called “property shops” by the company) in the following locations:

Fees and Commission

Whilst exact fee and commission figures are not disclosed on the Engel & Volkers website, it is fair to assume that they charge the standard Maltese commission fee of 5%, with the potential for a lower fee of around 3.5% for a sole agency arrangement.
